Unfortunately the European Championships finished with no racing on the final two days due to lack of winds. Therefore all our sailors placings stayed the same as our last report. The Regatta winners were Italy in the Girls' fleet and Greece in the Boys'. All the sailors feel they came exceptionally far during the regatta and will have lots of experience to bring home.
I feel they performed well against a fleet that was made up of many countries' nationally 1st ranked teams and the others' nationally 2nd ranked team, compared to our 4th ranked team!!!
Final Report NAM’s
The good breeze continued for the final two days of competition and Race Management got in all the scheduled 12 races.
The intensity of the racing never let up and generally the team just not getting good enough starts to be able to sail their own races. They never stopped trying as a few OCS’s showed, but they all learnt that what is good enough in New Zealand is not good enough internationally with a fleet of this standard. The USA team in particular was very strong and all the sailors relished the stronger breezes.
Henry Gibbs wins the Green fleet division
The overall winner of the Green fleet was Henry Gibbs of Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in the South Island, in second place was international sailor Vaitea Delvallet of Tahiti, and in third place was local Wakatere sailor James Grover-Grey.
There were perfect winds of 10-18knots on Saturday at Murrays Bay for the Inter Club Teams racing Championship. Eleven teams took part in the event including teams from Napier, Tauranga, Glendowie, Kohi and Murrays Bay. The teams where split into two courses for the morning racing with each team given a colour. Most impressive was Team Pink from Kohi where Eliza had a fluorescent pink rash vest and I’m sure I saw a pink band around Williams head!

Congratulations to Taylor Burn - 1st Open and 2009 National Champion!
The 2009 Nationals were organised by Richard and Ali Middleton, with help from numerous others. A big thank you to them all for their hard work and for a spectacular event.
The Open Fleet sailed a total of 14 races over 5 days of very changeable weather.
It featured the South Island Optimist Championships, the new Inter-Islander Optimist Challenge, as well as co-hosting the NZ Splash National Championship.
January 13-16, Eastern Beach, Willow Park Camp, Auckland
At this year's 4 day 'live in' clinic there were 71 sailors ranging from 9 years to 14 yrs old. There were 4 sailors from Noumea and the rest from all over the country including 12 from the South Island.
The group was made up of 23 girls and 48 boys. The large group had loads of fun and many new friendships were made.
2011 Optimist Nationals
The 2011 Toyota Optimist New Zealand Nationals Championship was won by Leonard Takahashi-Fry, a 12 year old Aucklander representing Murrays Bay Sailing Club. Leonard drew ahead of his competitors by sailing a very consistent series and only one race outside the top ten placings. It's a meteoric rise for the young sailor who placed around 80th at the Optimist Nationals at Whitianga last year.
