Regatta results 15 races were sailed with George Gautrey the top placed Kiwi sailor finishing 6th overall and first 11 year old - well done George! Next were Alex Wotton (8th), Nick Egnot-Johnson (9th), Cameron Moss (10th), Sam Broome (13th), Patrick Haybittle (14th), Alastair Gifford (15th), Ellie Lane (16th), Travers Cole (18th), Kim Buchanen (20th) and Scott Inglis (22nd). There were a couple of siblings who enjoyed the warmer weather and breezes and entered the regatta as well. 

Who would have thought ...  the Optimist North Island title is heading south!  Jayvee Buchanan from Charteris Bay sailed a great regatta and proved his ability across a range of weather conditions to win the title. Jayvee is now the current North Island and South Island champion (he holds the South Island title which he won in February). 

First ever Kiwi success at New Caledonia Optimist Nationals! It has taken six years but finally a New Zealand competitor successfully claimed the New Caledonian Optimist National Championships held at SRC yacht club in Noumea. Patrick Haybittle, aged 12, from Naval Point Club and WaimakaririSailing and Powerboat Club, Canterbury, sailed withcalmness and consistency in heavy and light breezesthroughout the four days to comfortably win the regatta. Of the 15 races sailed, he won three and finished no worse than eighth including a Z flag penalty.

The South Island again dominated the Interislander Optimist Challenge, Island of origin Opti style, the winner decided from the best results through the age groups from both Optimist Classes.

Jayvee Buchanan of Charteris Bay won the Open Optimist Class for the second time, Taylor Burn of Queen Charlotte was 1 point behind in 2nd, and Liam Closey of Murrays Bay 3rd. Grace Hawtin of Queen Charlotte convincingly won the Green Fleet, Steffi Loncar of Queen Charlotte in 2nd and Blake Woodfield of Taupo 3rd.

NAMS 2010 Report One

We have all arrived safely with no problems on the airline with our gear etc, although due to a earthquake (5.5) Trent and Michaels sail tubes did not arrive into Kingston until 5.00pm on Wednesday hence the sailors were not able to get on the water yesterday, except Eliza and Nick who had travelled 16 hours with a 10 hour stop over in LA, but as you can probably understand they were just not ready for a sail.

Race Day One,

Today was promised that we would have building pressure up to 15 knots with the prevailing thermal breeze.  The first race was delayed due to light patchy winds, and once racing got under way the race was started in a light south west wind much lighter that what had been predicted.  Over the next couple of races after a couple of squalls had passed through the wind eventually started to build and reached to a peak of 15 knots.

The forecast for today was for wind up to 25 knots and the day started very cold with a light north west, swinging before race two to the South West building to approx 22 knots, with a large chop making exciting sailing conditions.  This breeze held in for the three flights and then eased off swinging back to original direction of North West delaying the start of race three.  After waiting for an hour the breeze again swung back to the South West at around 15 knots at which time the third race commenced.
